Example 1: A CBSE student has a CGPA of 9.2. What is the percentage?

Example 2: Semester 1 SGPA 8.0 (20 credits), semester 2 SGPA 9.0 (22 credits). Find the CGPA.

  • Σ(SGPA × credits) = 160 + 198 = 358
  • Σ credits = 42
  • 358 ÷ 42

Answer: 8.52

Example 3: Convert 8.0 CGPA to percentage using (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

  • (8.0 − 0.75) × 10

Why CBSE multiplies CGPA by 9.5

When CBSE used CGPA for Class 10, its marksheets stated that an indicative percentage could be estimated as 9.5 × CGPA. The factor comes from CBSE’s analysis of past results, where students in the top grade band averaged about 95 marks. It is an approximation — your actual marks may be higher or lower.

CBSE has since moved back to marks for board results, but CGPA-to-percentage conversion still matters for older marksheets, school reports and many private boards.

SGPA vs. CGPA in college

SGPA (semester grade point average) is for a single semester. CGPA (cumulative) combines all semesters so far, weighted by the credits in each semester. A semester with more credits counts more, which is why simply averaging SGPAs can give the wrong answer.

Each university publishes its own CGPA-to-percentage rule. Recruiters and admissions offices usually accept the formula printed on your transcript, so always quote that one.
