Example 1: A student scores 88 out of 100 in Science. What is the CBSE grade?
- 88% lies in 81–90
Answer: A2 (grade point 9); 3 more marks for A1
Example 2: A college student scores 45 out of 50. What is the UGC grade?
- (45 ÷ 50) × 100 = 90%
- 90% ≥ 90
Answer: O (grade point 10)
How CBSE grades really work
The fixed ranges on this page (A1 = 91–100 and so on) are the scale most schools use for internal exams and report cards. On CBSE board marksheets, however, grades are positional: the top one-eighth of candidates who pass a subject receive A1, the next one-eighth A2, and so on. So in a tough paper, 88 marks could still earn A1.

Frequently asked questions
What marks are needed for an A1 grade?
On the fixed school scale, 91 or more out of 100. On CBSE board marksheets, A1 is given to the top one-eighth of passed candidates in each subject, so the cut-off changes every year.
What is the pass mark in CBSE?
You need 33% in each subject (theory and practical/internal assessment combined, with minimum requirements in each part as set by CBSE). The D grade (33–40) is the lowest passing grade.
What does grade point mean?
A grade point is the number attached to a grade — for example A1 = 10, A2 = 9 — used to calculate CGPA or SGPA.
Is O grade better than A+?
Yes. On the UGC 10-point scale, O (Outstanding) is the highest grade with 10 grade points, followed by A+ with 9.
Can I use my percentage directly?
Yes. Set maximum marks to 100 and enter your percentage as the marks obtained.
