Solved examples

Example 1: Marks: 90, 95, 80, 70, 85 out of 100 each. Find the percentage.

  • Total = 420 out of 500
  • (420 ÷ 500) × 100

Answer: 84%

Example 2: Six subjects: 90, 95, 80, 70, 85, 99. Find the best-of-5 percentage.

  • Drop the lowest (70)
  • Best 5 total = 449 out of 500

Answer: 89.8%

Example 3: Theory 62/80 and practical 28/30 in Physics. What is the subject percentage?

  • Total = 90 out of 110
  • (90 ÷ 110) × 100

Answer: 81.82%

Best-of-5 percentage for college admissions

Many colleges calculate eligibility using your best five subjects rather than all subjects. The rules differ: some require English or a language to be included, and some count only academic subjects. This calculator picks your five highest-scoring subjects; if your college requires a specific subject, make sure it is in your list.

Even where entrance tests decide admission, colleges still check a minimum class 12 percentage for eligibility, so it helps to know both your overall and best-of percentages.

Different maximum marks in each subject

If subjects have different maximum marks — for example 80 in theory and 20 in internal assessment, or 70 plus 30 practicals — add up the marks and maximums separately before dividing. Averaging the individual subject percentages gives a slightly different (and usually incorrect) answer.

How do I calculate the percentage of marks in board exams?

Add your marks in all subjects, divide by the total maximum marks and multiply by 100. For 420 out of 500, the percentage is 84%.

How is best-of-5 percentage calculated?

Choose the five subjects with your highest scores, add those marks, divide by their total maximum marks and multiply by 100.

Should I include additional (6th) subjects?

For your overall percentage, include all subjects shown on your marksheet. For best-of-5, a 6th subject can replace a lower-scoring one if your board or college allows it.

Can I average the percentages of each subject?

Only if every subject has the same maximum marks. Otherwise, add the marks and maximums first and then divide.

How do I convert my percentage to CGPA?

For the CBSE scale, divide the percentage by 9.5. The calculator shows this automatically; for other scales use the CGPA calculator.
