Indian land measurement units

Land in India is still commonly measured in local units. A gaj is a square yard (9 sq ft), widely used in North India for plots. A cent (435.6 sq ft, or 1/100 of an acre) is common in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and a guntha (1,089 sq ft, or 1/40 of an acre) is used in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Gujarat.

Bigha, biswa and kanal vary from state to state, so they are not included here — always confirm their local value before a property transaction.

Speed conversion shortcut for exams

Time-speed-distance questions often mix km/h and m/s. Multiply km/h by 5/18 to get m/s, and multiply m/s by 18/5 to get km/h. For example, 90 km/h = 25 m/s.
